Baobab (Adansonia digitata) is a tree whose origin has been traced to Madagascar, Arabia, Africa and Australia. The baobab is a huge tree that mainly grows in semi-arid areas which normally receive low rainfall. However, this has not prevented this tree from producing what
has come to be known as the super fruit – the baobab fruit. The fruit has a large casing, the size of a coconut, enclosing the seeds. Inside this casing are seeds. The baobab seed is coated with powder. This powder contains high levels of Vitamin C, Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium and dietary Fibers. Inside this baobab fruit seed is a nut.
The baobab fruit is magical in the sense that it dries on the tree to a moisture level that extend their shelf life even before processing. Once picked from the tree, the fruit is broken to recover the seeds. The powder coated on the seeds can be used to make smoothies and also as an
ingredient in many food products due to its high mineral content.
The baobab seed is then dried further, in preparation to cracking and oil extraction. Once dry, the seeds are cracked to obtain the kernel inside them. The kernel is then pressed to extract oil.
